El Angel’s Landscape and the volcanic zone Chiles:
El Angel’s landscape to the north of Carchi (Ecological reserve El Angel) posses the largest extrusions of frailejones in Ecuador, it’s one of the strangest and beautiful views. In this Reserve exists the Laguna’s Del Voladero y others which are smaller inside the sea of frailejones. Besides the Frailejones, you have the gigantic Puya, with flowers reaching 6 meters high. This ecosystem is refuge of the rare El Gatos Pajero. Directions: From the south, from El Angel through the old trail to Tulcan (there are many neighbouring paths, ask locally). In this trajectory you’ll find the Reserve. From the north: 8 km to the south of Tulcan by the Pan-American freeway is where Las juntas is found, from there take a detour to you right which is the old trail to El Angel. Las Laguna’s Del Voladero is not visible from the highway, there are signs that indicate its location, and from there you will have to walk for about 30 minutes. To the volcanic zone Chiles is accessed from Tulcan from the west to the population of Tufiño (Thermal waters, such as Aguas Hediondas), from there continue trough a path parallel to the border, until you arrive to Chical. In the path close to the volcano Chiles, and then down to the cloudy forest, with beautiful landscape.


Vía Playón of San Francisco - La Bonita (Sucumbíos):
Cloudy eastern jungle from to the beach of San Francisco to the Bonita Flora and Fauna is very rich. How do get there: To the Beach you can access from Huaca (Population between Tulcán and San Gabriel) and take a highway in NE direction (18km.) Later head the towards the border population of Santa Barbara y head east towards La Bonita. You need a 4x4 vehicle.  Be careful with the weather and running out of gasoline.


Biological Station Guandera:
 This is a Spectacular place in the eastern mountainside, with a landscape of Frailejones and a cloudy jungle. Here you can find spectacled bear and other species. Guandera is the name of a tree How to get there: From San Gabriel to Mariscal Sucre (Colonia Huaquña) at 12km, from there take the summer path towards the hills, you can hire pick up trucks in Marical Sucre. From Quito you can count on 4 and half hours. The station is managed by Fundación Jatun Sacha.


Bosque’s de los Arrayanes:
Mainly conform of arrayanes, old trees covered with moss and epiphytes. It’s about 40 hectares large. Its original name is Santa Marta de Cuba. It’s found at 7 km. of San Gabriel. Ask for the waterfall called, Cascada de Paluz (30m. in height) close to San Gabriel (3km).

Gruta de La Paz:
Religious Pilgrimage place located at 5km NE of Bolivar. Interandino landscape and creeks with a variety of wild flowers. Grottos and their surroundings are favourite places for animal lovers.


Valle Del Chota:
This is a Dry vegetation valley close to the mountain range with dry subtropical weather. The algarrobas, with an umbrella shape and the cactus dominated the landscape. The excavating owl lives there, which is also active during the day, and lives in burrows like a rabbit. They farm sugar canes and vegetables. The obo tree is famous for its delicious fruit. The dominating population is afro-Ecuadorian. How to get there: You can access it through Ibarra or Tulcàn through the Pan-American Highway to the population of Tababuela, Carpuela, Ambuqui, El Juncal, and Pimampiro, among others. Alrededores de Pimampiro

The cabins of San Jaun of Palahurcu, these are the woods of Polylepis and Alisos. You will see here the waterfall and river Molinoyacu.Reasons for going: you will find a lot of old history here. to name a few, petroglifs, cave drawings, potterery, and you will have the opportunity for cave exploration.


Bosque Medicinal Jambi Sacha
In the zone of the Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve, you will see community tourism and production of medinal herb's. You will also be able to observe birds such as the Andean Tucan, the Condor, etc. , which will be done from footpaths you can use. There will be community lodgind and retaurants for your use. Directions: It is located between Pimampiro and Mariano Acosta.


Laguna de Puruhanta y Bosque Matache
This mysterious lake is sorrounded by vegetation, humidity, and a very intriguing fog, and it is located in the eastern mountain range. This lagoon has been seldomly been explored and even less so itys environs because of  it's mysteriouness. Directions:  Go 22  Km.from Pimampiro past San Fco. of Sissipamba. From thwere take a 4x4 vehicule a few Km. more. You will then walk for 4 or 5 hours, you should ask for a local guide.


Reserva Cerro Golondrinas
After you  descend down  into the dry and humid forest of the Chota valley, the contrast is fantastic to behold. The Golondrinas is a fabulous dry forest reserve, with species endimic only to the Choco. Directions: If you are going from Guallupe or Carolina it is located an hour and a half to Ibarra by the coast. Inside the reserve you can take a horse to go to the cabins of love, there is also camping. Contact # (593) (02) 250-2640


Zona de Lita (Imbabura) y Alto Tambo (Esmereldas)
This is one of the best areas for bird observation of species endimic only for the south of Choco and who live 600 meters high in the mountains. Directions: from Ibarra take the paved road towards the coast for approximately 2 hours. There are cabins and lodges near Alto Tambo in the Motaña Rio Chuchuvi Reserve.


Laguna de Yahuarcocha
Also know as the lake of Bloob or Blood Lake, is located immediately to the north of Ibarra. There is a book here telling of the bloody battle brought on by the Caras indegenas that came before their more peaceful followers the Incas. IT is an exiting story that you should inquire about. Aquatic birds live aruond the lakes edges. there is a highway located around the lake. you can go on foot , use horses, row boats and take a picnic.


Parque Ecologica de Guayabillas
Recriation, Sports, Picnics, and Footpaths. It's located in the San francisco parrish, Canton Ibarra.


Peguche, La Cascada Sagrada
Immediately to the North of Otavalo you will find the population of  Peguche and thier sanctuary waterfall, originating from the San Pablo Lake.It is actually more like a reserve with woods, flowers, and humming birds. All of the indigenes festivals are held here like  they are done in Inti Raymi.


Lago San Pablo
Is one of the biggest lakes in the country at the foot of the Imbabura volcano, it is an incomparable view. The shores contain totoras and other aquatic plants. Appropiate water sports for this lake; water skies, jet skies, swimming, canoeing , etc.Lodging: there are various hostals, restaurants, recreational areas, etc.


Volcan Imbabura
This is a composed type ofvocano with to united volcanic bodies.The smaller on towards the lake has a very small but beautiful lake inside the crater, but this is a little known fact. It is possible to see how it ascends from the north shore de San Pablo. On the top, you can scale two down from La Esperanza. Climbing is relatively easy. Height 4609m.

Vertinentes de Yanayacu:
Ecoturistic complex, medicinal waters, recreacional areas, sports fields, restaurants. How to get there: Located 1 km from Cotacachi.

Tolas de  Atuntaqui:
Orozcotola, where Shyri Cacha is buried. Pupotola, is the tomb of Queen Pacha. Pailatola is the war drum.

Parque Condor
Rescue center for Condors. How do get there: From Otavalo to Lake San Pablo, take a detour to Eugenio Espejo and from there till you reach Pucará Alto. Open Tuesday to Sunday, from 9h30 to 17h00. Telf: (5932)(06)292-4429.

Lagunas de Mojanda:
Series of lagoons in the Macizco de Mojanda. Maximum point: Volcan Fuya-Fuya. Beautiful landscape of the hillside, from where condors can be seen.

Laguna Cuicocha (Ecological Reserve Cotacachi-Cayapas):
Without any doubt, one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world. Its an extinguish carter which turned into a lagoon, with islands in the center (two volcanic cones). The shores of the carter are carter are impresive and filled with purple orquideas. The Cotacachi volcano dominates. There are boat trips, and gigantic tourts can be seen.

Bosque de Peribuela:
Primary forest in the the Cotacachi-Cayapas Reserve.

Laguna de Donoso o Yanahurco (Ecological Reserve Cotacachi-Cayapas): Intresting lanscape with several lagoons. You can arrive on foot from El Rosario or from the hillsides of Yanahurco de Piñan (you need to be in good shape and tour guides, for example callRefugio Cuicochamanta, at (5932)(06)931-313. Bring a tent.

Valle de Intag and the Couldy Jungle Reserve:
There are several private reserves and comunity, indispensable for bird wacthers and nature lovers, Reservas Siempre Viva, Siempre Verde y Árbol Lindo: Conjoint protected forest. (Cuicocha-Santa Rosa section)

Alto Chocó Reserve (2500 Hec.) arrive through Santa Rosa. Mananage through Zoo-breviven Fondation. Spectacle bear are being research in this reserve.


Comunity forest Flor de Mayo: close to Santa Rosa, orquies, medicinal plants, educative footpaths, etc. Reserva La FloridaCommunity Reserve Junín.

Reserva La Florida Excelent cloudy jungles which are protected forests. nature resort and cabins. You can find birds in the lower zones, but the upper parts are ideal for birdwatchers. There are lek de gallos de la peña,


Reserva Biológico Los Cedros:

Spectacular reserves posses 7000 acres of jungle. On the edge of Toisán, south of the ecological reserve Cotacachi- Cayapas. Fabulous flora and fauna, and waterfalls among other things. Among a large variety of mammals, there's a rare spider monkey, and some of the greatest Choco birds. How do get there: 7 hours on foot or 4 by horse starting from Saguangal, west of Gracía Moreno.
